Match Report

To face a Uni team for the first match of the season, can either be a good thing or a bad thing; good thing, as they are fresh off Freshers Week and finding their feet, hopefully with a hangover and scrabbling around for numbers or bad, as they are young, fit and you never quite know what you are going to get.  Warning signals started early when the ladies 1s played them in the morning fixture and they had 4 - yes 4 subs!
The pesky warning bells continued to go off as 2 by 2, like Noah’s bloody Ark (apt for the weather) they glided out of their changing room - how many were there?  When you thought they had the whole population of Camborne on the pitch, 3 more turned up!  And god, they were tall.  We nervously, pulled down our new see through, thigh exposing, near indecent skorts and pretended not to see their already perfected warm-up.
However there was an air of confidence about us, as we welcomed Claire’s Daughter “Daisy”, rookie Jo, Charlotte back from injury and Katie into goal.  We shared possession for the first 20 minutes, with everybody fighting and making the tackle first and working hard for each other.  They broke our defence first, under a questionable play.  Their captain lifted the ball over Helen’s head from a few feet away and instead of going down like a sack of quivering spuds, who had been snipered from the top of the swimming pool, rock hard “Psycho” Helen, carried on without bleating, which led them to run into score..
Undeterred, we continued to press but went in 1-0 down.  We came out and although we were shattered, we continued to show fantastic resilience, with Sam converting a short corner to level it up.  Unfortunately a flick was awarded to CSM, when a non-existent foot was detected saving a goal on the line.  2s debutant Katie, stepped up, with a menacing smack of her gloves and saved to the right, with her stick hand.  Jubilation!
This spurred us on further, as we continued to push and share possession.  We managed to get into the D for another short corner, which after a melee, a goal was pushed over the line by “Daisy”!  2-1 up and 6 minutes to go.  We defended, like our little lives depended on it, as we managed to see out the last short corner, which was awarded in the last minute!!  Fantastic work!!
Man of the match:  Sam for weaving through their defence and scoring.
Contenders:  Literally anybody could have been man of the match today - we worked so hard!  Great first game as Captain for Amber.
Donkey of the match:  Classic stitch up by Evie for telling everybody our private conservation at the short corner, as I told her that “it feels like I’m giving birth to my shorts”.
Contender:  The mens firsts for walking away with our team tea cakes!
Special mention:  Fantastic support as always from the side-line - really got us over the line.  Thanks to Mike and Jacko for umpiring.
Team teas:  7/10 - Lesley marked down for allowing our cakes to be stolen by the Mens 1s and having her pizza cutter stolen.
