About the club

Welcome to Bodmin Hockey Club!

Our Ethos

We pride ourselves on making hockey as fun and as enjoyable as possible. Our club culture focuses on the investment in youth hockey and nurturing local talent through our large junior section and into our high performing senior teams. Bodmin hockey club wants to play a style of hockey that is fast, fluid and fun.  We do this by being technically and tactically creative, promoting team spirit and enjoying the game through a positive and friendly club culture.

We develop as players and teams through excellent coaching and promoting a culture of player, volunteer, coaching and umpire development in support of England Hockey’s aims.

Senior Hockey

Our players play in the senior leagues from the age of 13 to 63 and there is a huge range of fitness levels and experience in between!  If you’d like to join our club, why not have a free training session first to see how you get on?  Firstly, pop us an email bodminhc@gmail.com or find us on Facebook and we will say hi and give you a bit more information.  For the first training, you will need shinpads and a drink and we highly recommend a gumshield – we can provide a stick if you don’t have one.  Whatever your ability, you will start that session off training with the second team.  If you are a ones player, you will be moved up accordingly the following week.  You will be assigned a buddy, who will make sure you are OK and it’ll means you only have one name to learn, not dozens!

If you really enjoyed the training and keen to commit further, our full season membership is £105 per year, which includes all training (between August and March) and insurance.  Some people only want to train but if you wish to be available for selection for matches, then match fees are £7.50 per game.  After a game, we have our team teas, which for home games is at the Bodmin Rugby Club.  This is an opportunity to vote for (wo)man of the match, the lesser coveted Donkey and to have a post-match analysis with your team-mates.

If you can’t commit to many matches, we do have a social membership, where you can play up to 5 games in the season and pay £3 per training session.

Socially, we have our main events of Christmas party and the end of Season/awards evening, where we all get together as a club.  In between those milestone events, we have ad-hoc meals or drinks out.

We have lots of seniors join who say “they haven’t played for years” or “picked up a stick since school” but it really doesn’t matter, you will be welcomed and you’d be surprised how quickly you pick it up and if like Lesley, our regular ladies 2s defender, who didn’t pick up a stick until she was 47, you too could find a love for a new sport!

Ladies train: Wednesdays, 6pm-7:30pm

Men train: Wednesdays, 7:30pm-9pm

Teenagers

You may have tried hockey at school and really enjoyed it, or you may have seen hockey played on TV or none of these and just fancied giving it a go, well Bodmin is the club for you.  We cater for all abilities from people who just want to give it a go, right through to County players.

** Next Seasons training times comming soon **

The first session is free, so you are welcome to come along and give it a go.  Please don’t worry if you don’t know anybody, most people start that way but they feel right at home very quickly.  We have players who come from Camelford, St Austell, Wadebridge and of course Bodmin.  You will need to wear shin pads and a gum shield (unless you have braces) and a bottle of water (water is also available at the water fountain in the centre).  We can provide a stick if you don’t have one.

If you are over 13 and you do show talent, you maybe invited to train and/or play with the senior 2s teams.  You may also be entered for County selection. This progression will be discussed with you and your parents, to ensure that you are comfortable at every stage.

The cost for badger/colt membership is £60 (includes all training sessions and insurance) and £3 per game or for juniors playing for the seniors, it is £75 subs and £3.50 per game.

Socially, our teenagers are invited to the end of season awards evening and Christmas party.

Junior Hockey

Hockey is a fantastic sport to be involved in, not only as a player but as a family and we do try our hardest to foster a family friendly environment within the club.  If your child would like to try hockey, the first session is free.  Firstly, pop us an email bodminhc@gmail.com or find us on Facebook and we will say hi and give you a bit more information.  Alternatively, you can just turn up and register with Lesley, who sits on the bench, just outside the pitch gate.  From there, we will take your details and you’ll be asked to stay for the first session.  If your child has enjoyed it and wants to continue, we will provide membership information to you for you to sign up.  The cost for a whole season’s training is £60.

For the first session, they will need shin pads, a gum shield (a cheap one will do) and a bottle of water.  We can provide the stick, if required.

We tend to split our children into Under 8s, Under 10s and Under 12s but depending on your child’s ability, they may be put in the most suitable group for their ability.  Under 10s have a fully inclusive policy for the 4 tournaments held each season, which are played against other clubs in a fantastic spirit.  The Under 12 girls and boys select for their tournaments and again this is a fantastic opportunity for them to work as a team and really put into practise what they learn at their training.

Our coaches are fully DBS checked, qualified, with a focus on inclusivity and fun.

From juniors, our players can progress through the ranks of the teams, into the development teams and when they are older and if they have the ability and temperament, they can train and play with the seniors from there.  We’ve even converted a number of our parents to training with the seniors!

Junior Training is Thursdays: 6pm-7pm
